HATCH TEAM

Hatch is a collective of cross-functional theatre makers based in Singapore and London.

Our explorations in theatre making has produced original local narratives that resonate with global audiences. We want to empower others to believe that every story waiting to be told has an audience waiting to be discovered.

 

HAFIDZ RAHMAN

Hafidz Abdul Rahman graduated from Lasalle College Of The Arts majoring in Theatre Arts. He is a full time arts educator, part time playwright and during his free time he is either cooking or impersonating a middle aged Malay woman. Past stage work includes Balek Kampung, Without Reason, Angkat, Performing Malay Sketches, Rasa Sarang and Was-Wasan 2020.

KHAI

Khai is a creative producer from Singapore and is currently based in London. She graduated from Royal Central School of Speech and Drama with MA (Distinction) in Creative Producing.

She started as an Assistant Production Coordinator for the M1Singapore Fringe Festival with The Necessary Stage and then Programmes Manager for Performing Arts at The Substation.

Khai also founded 'RUMAH' in London which means 'HOME' in the Malay language.
RUMAH is an initiative to open up spaces for integration amongst artists from the various Asian diasporas. Since the pandemic, she has initiated digital projects such as Monologues From My Bedroom, a collaboration with Cognatus Theatre and Rumah’s Solidarity Project, an archival of Singapore’s Malay Theatre excerpts, supported by National Arts Council, Singapore.

Khai was previously a recipient of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Emerging Producers Bursary. Currently, she is being supported by Metroland Cultures Fund and the Society Theatre Research Covid-19 Support grant from London to continue developing her producing practice during this unique time. 

MOHAMAD FAIZAL ABDULLAH

Mohamad Faizal Abdullah is a Muslim-Malay theatre-maker. He graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London in 2019 with an MA in Performance Making. He has worked with companies such as TheatreWorks, Act3 Theatrics, Cake Theatrical Productions and Teater Ekamatra. His work as a performer and director has taken him to festivals in Malaysia, Australia and Japan. He is also the artistic director of Hatch Theatrics.

During his time at Goldsmiths, he developed Siapa Yang Bawa Melayu Aku Pergi? (Who Took My Malay Away?), a solo performance that examines the Singaporean-Malay history and identity. He continues to work on it and the performance has been presented as a work-in-progress at Camden People’s Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre and Park Theatre in London.

In 2020, he directed a digital presentation of Precious Cargo - an autobiographical play about Operation Babylift, which was a mass-adoption programme that happened at the end of the Vietnam War - and co-produced Rumah’s Solidarity Project, a digital archive of excerpts from Singapore Malay plays.

 

 

NADIA CHERIYAN

A full-time sound kiosk, Nadia Cheriyan, explains herself in sounds and pastries.

 

Nadia is no stranger to the stage having performed in Paparazzi NTU’s musical I Love You Because…, Act 3 International’s Where I Belong, Panggung Arts’ Friends & Co and Pedestrian Productions’ Transcience.

 

Nadia’s stage management credits include Radin Mas - A Princess of Singapore & Danial dan Buku Ajaib, collaboration between Mini Monsters and the Esplanade as well as Hatch Theatrics’ National Memory Project - Ruang.

 

Not limited to calling cues, Nadia has also done backstage work in Panggung Arts’ Dan Tinggal Tiga Baju Raya..., Project X- Orang Utan (Asia), and NUS’ Re: Almost Left Behind for the Singapore Arts Festival.

JOHNNY JON JON

Johnny Jon Jon read English at Nanyang Technological University where he also did a minor in Creative Writing. Jon Jon got his first taste of theatre through Teater Ekamatra’s Pesta Peti Putih (2006) before joining Ekamatra’s Playwright Mentorship Programme to produce Rendezvous Point (2007). In 2009, he wrote Orang Utan (Asia) as part of Panggung Arts’ Race to the End as well as Uncle for Ekamatra’s Project Suitcase 2009.

Jon Jon was featured in Panggung Arts’ ProjecX (2010) before going on a two-year hiatus to rethink his craft. In 2012, Jon Jon joined Hatch Theatrics and returned to the stage with National Memory Project. He collaborated with Hatch Theatrics again to stage Hawa (2015), as well as Berita Kepada Kawan (2015). 2016 was a year of restagings as National Memory Project and Hawa was restaged for Twenty Something Theatre Festival and Singapore Theatre Festival respectively. Jon Jon made his international debut with Hawa at the Brisbane Festival 2017. His latest piece, Potong (2018), directed by Irfan Kasban and produced by Teater Ekamatra, received critical success.
